Hello, I’m Andrew, the psychology teacher at Adcote and I’ve 10 years of teaching experience. I’m from Canada and I’ve also taught in Japan. I’ve taught and mentored multiple top students who have received conditional offers to Oxford, UCL, Manchester, and Edinburgh Universities.

The key features of my courses are a foundational understanding of scientific method and critical thinking so they are able to apply the concepts they learn in real world situations. We create and conduct live experiments here on campus and present our findings to fellow students once a semester.

In previous years students have investigated psychological topics such as: “A person’s willingness to conform to peers – and the factors that amplify conformity” Wherein students observed the likeliness of a student, unfamiliar with a social group, to go along with progressively more obviously incorrect answers. Then using self-reports to identify the factors that led them to obey the group and comparing it to known instances of this study.
I believe this hands on way to studying science is so important because it shows the kids that these theories and experiments have real world application and it’s accessible to them. Additionally it sets the stage for students for when they get into universities and conduct experiments and take part in labs themselves. The scientific method that is taught in psychology can be applied to various scientific realms and the critical thinking taught is invaluable.
