Adcote School is very special to us all and when we see the accomplishments of the students it is heartwarming. The efforts of students and teachers this first semester have gone a long way to making the school start on the path to success. Each student has a role to play in this project and we recognise the importance of each parent in helping their child be prepared for school each week. Thank you very much for your hard work as well since we are in partnership together.
It is important that all of the students recognise their responsibilities towards the school and each other. We are like a crew working in unison to sail through this period of their lives. On a ship there are always things to do, to fix, to prepare, and to make more efficient.
Some days the ship and crew are completely one, utterly focused on the purpose of learning and achieving great things. On those days we expect all of us, including the students, to take time to recognise the excellence that is possible and to be grateful for the people, especially their parents, who have made it possible. When someone goes to sea they remember the good things and people who made them strong for the journey; they see their success and remember that the people at home are a key reason for their hard work.
They know that what lies ahead will be an adventure and that those at home long for them to succeed and to also see the world with a new perspective. In order to do well in this world they know that they have to work hard at speaking other languages, especially English, and to adapt quickly to new situations for their time abroad in the future.
A successful crew talks together about their experiences with each other and how well they are fulfilling their duties. We expect the students to be involved in each other’s education as supporters and crewmates, not just observers but as participants who have much to do with each other’s success. When the students learn from their own and each other’s successes (and mistakes), they have an amazing opportunity to grow even more quickly. This growth is in maturity and reliability, not only outwardly see but inwardly so that they learn to trust themselves for the right reasons and to grow in determination.
Our students are required to have an international outlook, to develop independent learning skills, and to find their purpose for education. This has to be done with a team spirit if everyone is to develop together. When one student helps another then they also help themselves since education now is about learning to work and think together. We don’t expect everyone to always like each other but we do expect a unified purpose and determination to excel.
We are the crew of a full ship, not an empty boat or a lonely boat. Our ship has adults and children, all learning together and eager to see each other succeed. We urge you as parents to care for your children during these next few weeks with the belief that their best is still to come. We will continue to challenge them and to teach them the academic and social skills as best we can, building on your good work. We hope you all have a very happy New Year.
